Overwatch tells the story of larger-than-life heroes doing battle over larger-than-life concepts. I wanted to bring one of them down to Earth and tell a story about a more human moment in their day-to-day lives.
There exists within the world of Overwatch an arcade called 8-bit Hero. That was what prompted me to make an 8-bit version of Overwatch.
Initially, I planned on using a wider shot of the arcade to convey how alive the room was with onlookers and passersby. However, due to time constraints, I made the choice to crop in and let the sound suggest activity instead.
I wanted the details of the cabinet to tell its own story. Scanlines over the pixel art. A pair of monitors with mismatched color settings suggesting at some point one had to be replaced. A yellowed sign letting you know its age and coin slots, complete with the symbol for Overwatch's in game currency.
